New Common Core Math Standards Workshops
The Common Core Standards are changing the face of Curriculum in the United States of America. Dr. Nicki Newton can support k-5 schools as they unpack and make sense of the new Common Core Math Standards for teachers, administrators and parents.
Workshop 1: Getting Started with the new Common Core Math Standards
*Presented in grade bands: k-1; 2-3; 4-5 or k-2; 3-5
This workshop introduces the standards, discusses a variety of implementation strategies and looks at ongoing assessment. The introduction segment involves a close look at the new depth of the content strands- focusing in on each indicator. The implementation segment presents a variety of models for teaching the new content knowledge. The assessment segment examines a variety of options for balanced assessment of these standards including diagnostic tests, ongoing quizzes, standards based interviews/conferences, performance tasks and summative assessments.
Workshop 2: Aligning the new Common Core Math Standards
This workshop is specifically designed to assist schools in aligning the new Common Core Standards with existing curricula and instruction. This includes embedding the new standards into your current curriculum maps and helping teachers to negotiate what they are currently doing with what is expected according to the new standards.
Workshop 3: Access for All: Guided Math and the New Common Core Standards
This workshop looks at the ways that guided math can help provide access for all students in the implementation of the new Common Core Standards. In this workshop, we explore how the continuum of learners including English Language Learners, Special Education Students, Students with Learning Dis/Abilities and Gifted and Talented Students all get equal access to the standards through small, guided group instruction. We look at the framework for guided math and how implementation of this powerful teaching structure can help provide scaffolded, differentiated, engaging instruction for all students.
Workshop 4: Ell Learners and the New Common Core Standards
This workshop looks at the ways that guided math can help provide access for English Language Learners to the New Common Core Standards. We specifically look at the nature of teaching math to English Language Learners and the variety of ways to scaffold access to the new curriculum so that students are successful. We take an in-depth look at how to integrate the academic language goals with the academic content goals.
Workshop 5: Closing the Gap between the Old Standards and the New Standards
In this workshop we discuss how closely your state or district standards align with the new Common Core standards. What gaps exist? What overlaps exist? How will you roll out the implementation this year so that you begin to get ready for these new standards. Dr. Nicki Newton can closely analyze your current math standards and benchmarks to identify the prerequisite knowledge and skills students need to master to be prepared. She can help you develop ways to supplement your current standards for the 2010-2011 school year so that your students are adequately prepared for the new Common Core. Dr. Nicki Newton has helped schools nationwide map their curriculum.
Workshop 6: Special Education and the New Common Core Standards
*Presented in grade bands: k-1; 2-3; 4-5 or k-2; 3-5

We specifically look at the nature of teaching math to Special Education Students and the variety of ways to scaffold access to the new curriculum so that students are successful. We take an in-depth look at how to scaffold learning, create differentiated lessons, and make accommodations and modifications for Special Education Students.
Workshop 7: Math Centers and the New Common Core Standards
*Presented in grade bands: k-1; 2-3; 4-5 or k-2; 3-5
This workshop looks at the ways that rigorous, student-centered, standard based math centers can help scaffold access to the new Common Core Standards. We specifically look at the how to create, align and implement math centers to the standards so that students can build conceptual understanding, procedural fluency and problem solving skills. We look at a how flexible grouping allows students to work independently, with partners and in groups at different centers. This engaging workshop shares a variety of classroom tested, research and standards based, engaging math centers that are sure to provide purposeful practice for elementary school students.

Dear Dr. Nicki, I was at your workshop in Rochester NY yesterday. I absolutely loved it! You are an amazing speaker. I am a 23 year veteran of PreKindergarten and face grade reassignment , due to a possible cut to my program. That is one reaason I took the workshop. The information you shared will give me a leg up should I be reassigned. Thank You!
