Using the balance as a model or illustration of simple equations is a great way to build understanding.

Here are some great resources.

Math Playground – Model the equation by dragging the number and x tiles to the scale.  It is a great game to teach about equality.

Article  – This article discusses how to use the balance as a model or illustration of simple equations for students who are just starting to study equations.
