Guess My Number Activity

Posted on May 28, 2012. Filed under: Assessment, Classroom environment, Common Core, Elementary math, Math is a Language | Tags: , , , , , |

This is a great routine to put up in your class (scroll down to the middle of the page).  You get to review tons of skills.  You should laminate this so that students can actually go up and work on the chart.  I love the way that it is color coded.  Be sure to give all kinds of prompts across the domains:

Examples:

Is your number a 2 digit number?

Is your number greater than 10?

Is your number equivalent to the number of inches in a foot?

Is your number equivalent to the sides of a hexagon?

Is your number less than 100?

You get to review concepts and vocabulary!  Wonderful!

Skip Counting Center Ideas

Posted on May 21, 2012. Filed under: Assessment, Classroom environment, Common Core, Graphic Organizers, Manipulatives, Math Centers | Tags: , , , , , |

Skip Counting by 10’s is a kindergarten activity.  In the CCSS Skip counting becomes an official unit of study in 2nd grade. Here are 10 ideas to teach and practice skip counting in different ways. Remember that you want to make sure that students understand the quantity that is associated with the count, so that your students are not just “skip chanting” with no conceptual understanding of what they are actually doing!

Example 1 (a yummy math center)

Example 2 (ladder)

Example 3 (skip counting sticks)

Example 4 (frames and arrows)

Example 5 (counting squares)

Example 6 (number counting printables)

Example 7 (skip counting necklace)

Example 8 (cup counting center)

Example 9 (poster ideas)

Example 10 (using bingo blotters)
