Successful Strategies for Guided Math Groups: Part 3-Reinforcing and Providing Recognition

How do you reinforce and provide recognition?

Marzano (2001) states that Reinforcing and Providing Recognition is another one of the main 9 strategies to move student achievement! There should be an emphasis here on the connection between effort and achievement.  Remember that Mathematical Practice 1 states that students will learn how to persevere.  Be sure to recognize perseverance and effort – the “stick-to-it-ness” of doing math.

Honor your students’ thinking daily.  Honor them publicly and privately – in whole group, guided math group and during math conferences. Display their work, praise their efforts and share their success stories with their guardians.

Also, remember when a student is struggling, Pause- Prompt and the Praise!

Always hold high expectations!  Make sure the students know exactly where the goal is and let them be a part of planning towards it! One way to do this is to have student individual data folders!  more student goals

Happy Mathing,
