We all know that you have to lay the foundation.  If you don’t lay the foundation then the building won’t stand.  Take the First 20 days seriously!  It is the blueprint for the school year.  Every minute you spend will save you hours later.  Fountas and Pinnell taught us that a long time ago.  The kindergarteners need more than 20 days probably and the 5th graders might get away with a few less (like 1 or 2 less).  Everybody needs the first 20 days.  Remember that students lose 2.6 months of school every summer.  So in those first 20 days, do the review as well as teach everybody how to do workshop. Focus on the priority standards  Here is a detailed plan for the first 20 days (chapter 9 of my guided math book) to help you.
