Thinking Puzzles
These puzzles get students to think about the operation. They have to look at and reason about the numbers. This flips what we usually do it. We often ask students to solve equations. These puzzles demand that they think about what is happening to the numbers. Make sure that you have students to explain their thinking when doing these. I love these. You can just write them up on your board and tailor them to your grade level. I would also write nontraditional equations as well (answer first or in other ways… see below).

I love using pictures to prompt discussion! I’ll show this and ask students to tell me the story. Students will work their way into 2 story word problems using the picture as a launch. This is part of getting students to reason about numbers. In activities like this they are contextualizing. Oftentimes working with word problems we focus on decontextualizing – going from words to numbers and in activities like these you are asking students to contextualize… going from the situation or the numbers to the story. Get your students talking, you will be amazed at what they say! Look at Pixabay and Unsplash for great copyright free pictures!
