Making Math Real
Here is a great math blog to check out. It has tons of posts about math in the real world, solid resources and some good videos! Check it out! Peter and Trish make lots of interesting interdisciplinary connections across many different grade levels. Here are the names of a few of their posts:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fGLmAs6YdQM&feature=related
How does this add to our teaching? How does putting this in our toolkit tap into spaces that digital learners inhabit? This is simply a song that serves as a mnemonic device to the procedure. You must make certain that along with things such as this that you teach students conceptually what they are doing. Students should be given real contexts of dividing fractions and have to represent their thinking and explain it. Along with that, then this type of song is an additional aspect of teaching and learning about dividing fractions. Remember to always make space for guided conversations in small guided math groups so that you can hear and see what individual students are doing!

This is a great site by PBS for grades 3 and up. Get the Math is a multimedia project about algebra in the real world. The site shows interviews and demos of how professionals working in fashion, videogame design, and music production use algebraic thinking. Then, they have opportunities for older students to “take on interactive challenges related to those careers.” It ties directly into the new Math Common Core, which places an emphasis on relating math to real life. The actual math problems are for older students but the videos are informative and engaging for many students.

This is a great site for rich math activities. Here is what they are doing in July! These are great thinking activities for kids. Be sure to make the students talk through what they are doing and why they are doing it! We need to do more of this type of stuff where our students really have to problem solve rather than just calculate!

This is a great site that shows you how to use base ten blocks to develop conceptual understanding of the operations. I would do all of these activities with the students in small guided math groups with real base ten blocks. I would then hold small guided math sessions at the computer so I could use this site to teach at the pictorial level. Finally, I would have the students work with this site during center time.

Graphing: Caught on Tape! Look at this great glog of 3 vignettes of students actively graphing their names with unifix cubes, real apples and fruit loops. I really like the way they are making like a pictograph on the top and then a bar graph on the bottom with the fruit loops. I also like the vocabulary in action. I would do these activities in small guided groups so that I could really do some building of the concepts as well as work with the vocabulary.

Here is a great glog to teach angles. Two things caught my attention. First, the video of the little man singing about angles is hilarious. Second, the angle game is great!
